With its D2 Gear design and fuel-efficient X-Craftic amalgam contour. The reel offers sufficient equipment quality and toughness to withstand even the most stringent conditions. With its carbon matrix braking system, this bait-casting reel provides luxurious air drag throughout the entire length of the train. So you get the precision and power you need to choke hard-pulling fish.
So, the question on your mind is probably what handed reel is best for me? That really comes down to what you have got used to when you first started angling and what feels more natural to you. Most anglers will tell you that it’s not the most fluid and easy things to do, switching casting methods from left to right or right to left after you become experienced with either one.

Baitcasters have become most popular through the tournament bass industry where bass anglers have found them to be indispensable tools for their pursuits. Baitcasting reels handle larger line diameters far better than spinning reels and heavy lines are often needed to wrestle large fish out of weed beds. These reels also have a completely different drive gear system from spinning reels that provides a lot more power for the angler. This makes the retrieval of many lure types much easier on the angler, especially after long hours of constant casting and cranking.
Penn did not disappoint us with their latest version, the Penn Battle II because it features an improved paint quality for further reel protection, increased drag pressure (about 20% increase), sealed ball bearings (they are now 5 stainless steel ball bearings), and upgraded spool. I also like the front drag HT 100 drag systems which make use of carbon washers. This helps make the reel's lifespan longer.
The only disadvantage to using a baitcasting reel is that they’re a bit more difficult to master than a spinning reel and a bad cast can end up landing you with a bird’s nest of tangled line that may leave you a bit flustered. These reels require a bit of practice, but if you make the investment of your time you’re sure to find out why so many people swear by them.

Reel overview: Since 1958 Daiwa started their journey. They introduced the first ‘open-faced reel’ and made a mark in the angling community. The Daiwa Laguna Baitcasting reel brings the quality and commitment to epic performance. Perfectly crafted low profile Baitcasting reel is ready to conquer the saltwater adventure. Unlike KastKing, the Laguna series ensure performance for the price. Let’s see how each feature operates.
You may have to spend some time mastering a baitcasting reel, but once you have put in the practice time needed, a good baitcasting reel will offer you unparalleled precision and excellent distance on your casts. By controlling the free spin of the reel, you can drop your bait or lure with pin-point accuracy. Overall, casting with this type of reel is more efficient than dealing with the bail and line on a spinning reel, and that is why you see the pros flipping and retrieving so many casts in such a short periods of time.

I mention all that, because I had to change my casting motion as a result. Those injuries are caused by overextension on tens of thousands of casts a year. But what I learned along the way, is that by shortening your motion by keeping your elbows tight to your sides, you can more effectively load and unload a rod on the cast which is what creates the inertia on the lure to give it distance. Let the rod load and unload without swinging your arms back and forward.

Like most things in life, there’s two ways to explain how to use a baitcaster. There’s the basic version that tells you how to cast and retrieve your baitcaster. Nothing’s wrong with the short lesson, as it works for those starting out. Once you have down the basics of a baitcasting reel you’ll want to become familiar with its other functions. Many have spool brake systems that will make learning how to cast a baitcaster much easier. Dialing in the drag to the proper setting is also a part of using a baitcaster, and helps ensure you land more fish. Dig in to the following article starting with the simple, and continuing into a more detailed course on how to use a baitcaster.
The rule of thumb I follow is to use spinning reels when I need to fish with light line (8-pound test or less) and switch to a baitcaster for fishing with heavy line (10-pound test or more). I do have some exceptions to the rule such as I fill my baitcaster with 8-pound monofilament when I fish suspended stickbaits for wintertime bass. Using lighter line helps my stickbaits dive deeper and I prefer the higher gear ratio of a baitcaster because I like to let my stickbaits sit still on a slack line and the baitcaster allows me to reel in line quicker to set the hook after I detect a strike.

With just less than 100 bucks, you can be sure of getting quality baitcasting reels that will help you catch even the strongest fish.
Once the brake has been set properly for the 1/2oz casting weight you can begin practice casting. Start with overhead casts of a light to medium strength power. Depress the thumb bar to put the reel in free spool mode and quickly place your thumb on the spool. Your thumb will keep the spool from rotating until you release it on the cast. Bring the rod tip back over your shoulder like you would for any overhead cast. Swing the rod forward under moderate power and release your thumb from the spool as your rod tip reaches the eleven o’clock position. As you release your thumb pressure from the spool on the cast, you want to maintain the slightest pressure on the line on top of the spool as the line spins off the spool. This is often referred to as “feathering” the line as the amount of pressure you are applying is minute. This helps to keep the spool from turning too quickly.

The Abu Garcia Classic round baitcaster comes in a few reel models: C3, C4 & C. Each of these models has a handful of sizes so there is no shortage of options for any fishing application. The Abu Garcia C3-6500 was the first baitcaster I ever owned. I’ve fished this reel hard for many years and I still use it today! That said, I dissemble the reel, clean and grease it each winter which has kept it like new. The price point and specs for this reel have made it mandatory for my list.
