Being called one of the most popular baitcasters year after year, the Revo SX has shown to impress myself with its durability and ultimate control while fishing. I have reeled in so many bass with this fishing reel. Combined with the sturdy Vendetta rod, this combo can be sick! Buy both the rod and reel and you will have a nice setup for years to come. You are getting a very good combo for the money. This rod and reel is for both beginners and more advanced fisherman. They are both super lightweight with the alloy and carbon reel coming in at only 6.6 oz. It has 10 bearings with a 7.1:1 gear ratio and comes in both a right and left hand model. There are multiple generations of these reel and I'm amazed how they continue to reduce the weight each year.
One big misconception that is often perpetuated in the fishing community is that the higher the number of ball bearings the higher the quality of reel. While that holds true for the top of the line reels, it's not exactly the case across the board. For example, you might have two $100 reels one with 10 ball bearings and another with 5. The ball bearings placed in the 10 ball bearing reel may only cost 10cents each and the one with only 5 ball bearings may cost a $1 each. The reel with 5 ball bearings of higher quality is going to last you longer and would be a better investment. So when looking at bearings look for words like shielded, double shielded and sealed bearings.

Depending on what you want out of a baitcasting reel, any of the three above are a great option for the best baitcaster under 100 dollars. Choose the one that fits your needs well – the Shimano Caenan for reliability and power, the Lew’s Speed Spool for speed and lightness, and the Abu Garcia Pro Max for quality at a great price. Any of these would make a great candidate for the best baitcasting reel for the money. Good luck on the water!

As you inspect a baitcaster, it will give you a maximum drag specification. This number tells you the highest amount of force the drag system can put against the spool. Anglers typically fish between half and ¾ of that number. The higher the max drag, the more force you will be able to place against pulling fish. To set the drag, you either turn a star dial or push a lever.
For beginners, the spinning reel would be appropriate, if you are finesse fishing and have enough patience. However, even the less experienced angler can find a baitcast reel suitable with a little practice. The choice is ultimately yours and which reel suits your style of fishing and the situation you’ve found yourself in whether you choose a baitcaster or spinning reel.
Another factor that will determine how your baitcaster performs is its gearing. Gear ratio tells an angler how many times the spool turns per one turn of the handle. The specification always puts the spool number first, then a colon, then the number 1 to represent the turn of the handle. For example, 6.2:1 means the spool turns 6.2 times with each full turn of the handle.
I resort to spinning reels mainly in the spring when bass are in the shallows and finesse tactics seem to work best. I also switch to spinning reels on windy winter days for casting suspending stickbaits because baitcasters tend to backlash too much when throwing those lightweight plugs into the wind. Some of my favorite finesse tactics I use with spinning tackle are wacky-rigging Senkos, shaking a finesse worm with a shaky head jig, skipping tube jigs and drop-shotting.
The mechanism of working of the gear ratio is simple and this just how easy it works. If the reel has a gear ratio of 5:0, it implies that the spool turns five times when you rotate the handle once. This means that the higher the first number of the ratio, the quicker the lure is pulled back to you. Different ratios are best suited for different types of lures. A gear ratio of 5:1 is generally regarded to be the average with 4:1 and 6:1 considered to be slow and very fast respectively. A slower gear ratio as low as 3:1 is recommended to be best suited for diving crankbaits and large spinnerbaits. An average speed gear ratio of 5:1 is recommended for Texas rigs, soft plastics and jigs while for other lures and some spinnerbaits, a pretty fast gear ratio of 6:1nto 7:1 should be considered.
The Abu Garcia Revo SX Low Profile Fishing Reel has an X2-craftic alloy frame which increased corrosion resistance and C6 carbon side plate provides significant weight reduction without sacrificing strength and durability. This Baitcast fishing reel is a very effective reel that offers a better enjoyable fishing experience. Some of the features it possesses includes;
Using a baitcaster, the angler releases the line by removing his thumb then must immediately bring his thumb back to bear on the line. Not to stop it, but with just enough of a touch to slow the spool. The reason? If the angler doesn’t do this the spool will spin faster than the release of line. This will cause the line to backlash, putting over wraps, under wraps, and knots throughout your spool. The minimum effect of backlash is a temporary halt to fishing. Worst case scenarios require a new spool of line.
The Mississippi pro stresses form is most important while casting. “I had a tendency of pulling my elbow up when I tried to make a cast, so my Dad actually tied a rope around my waste and my arm to hold my elbow down and made me cast several times. I spent days and weeks practicing casting in my back yard.  A lot of times I would set up in old tire or hula hoop and try to cast it into those and as I progressed I would reduce the target down to the size of a Coke can.”
This reel is easy to set up, adjust and use. Its performance is very smooth, thanks to its powerful features and specs. The drag is really smooth and powerful and can handle strong, fast and hard fighting fish. The medium gear ratio offers smooth and fast line retrieve and also suits a variety of fishing situations. The spool accommodates both monofilament and braid fishing lines.
Spinning reels are engineered for casting light baits ( which is not the case for every spinning reel), but with a baitcaster, the possibilities are endless. You can do Deep crankbaits, Big swimbait, Deepwater swimbaits, squarebill crankbaits, shallow spinnerbaits, Texas Rigs, Carolina Rigs, jerk baits, topwater etc with a baitcaster. (Note, specific bait presentation requires specific gear ratio).
A: Baitcasting reels have a bad reputation for being prone to backlashing when casting and being difficult to learn so why would anyone want to use a baitcasting reel? A baitcast reel is highly versatile and the ideal choice of fishing reel for a variety of fishing situations and techniques. Experienced anglers also prefer baitcast reels for the following reasons:

Shimano : A Japanese multinational company that manufactured sports goods and equipment with superior technology and designs. In last one decade, the company grew into a giant that captured fishing tackle industry producing technically superior fishing gears. Founded in the year 1921, the company is a public company with stocks traded on the stock market. Its 93 million shares are commonly traded stock while its fishing tackles contribute 19% of total sales.

As for handling, you get to choose between cork and EVA handles depending on which look and feel you like. Both options are durable and offer a soft, non-slip grip ensuring you have the control you need when casting and bringing in fish and offering comfort when fishing for hours. The cork handled reel is slightly more expensive than the EVA handled one.
Loosen the tension more. Now you are going to have to thumb harder at the very start of the release. You are still letting the line spin under your thumb but you have a bit more pressure because the startup inertia of the spool is going to be initially faster than the lure is going to pull the line off of the reel. You have to control that with early pressure then back off your thumb as the lure gets farther from you. This will take training your thumb.
Daiwa : The Globeride incorporations manufacturers fishing gears under the brand name Daiwa. It’s a Japanese company founded in 1958 with subsidiaries across the globe. The fishing gears manufactured to account for the majority of sales made by Globeride Inc. its fishing gears are of top quality make and are exported throughout the world. Along with fishing rods and reels, it also manufactures biking, golf, and tennis gears.

Favored by tournament anglers as well as by serious fishermen going after bigger freshwater species, baitcasting reels are ideal for casting larger lures and baits great distances. They have the substance and smooth drags to stand up to gut-wrenching runs that big fish will make. Although they’re a little harder to master than spinning reels, baitcasting reels have become much easier to use thanks to modern technology. At TackleDirect, you’ll find hundreds of freshwater baitcasting reels from leading manufacturers like Shimano, Abu Garcia and Quantum. Because these reels can toss heavier lures and baits and handle bigger fish, many of them are also appropriate for inshore saltwater fishing. That means you can get even more out of these crossover reels, whether you’re fishing for largemouth in your local lake or for redfish, snook and seatrout in the mangroves.
Another benefit of this tool is more control and better bait placement. Often, bass fishing requires you to place the bait in a precise location. This accurate placement can be awkward due to lack of control. Once you have this big fish on the hook, you have a better chance of landing it due to the increased leverage as the reel sits closer to the pole.
Shimano is a proven producer of great fishing reels and their Calcutta line has been setting the industry standard for round bait casting reels since 1991. The Conquest continues the heritage of the round reel as a true precision fishing machine. This compact round reel comes in at the top of the price range, but these reels are often referred to in angling publications as works of art and that description is not far off.
Purchasing a reel that does not feel comfortable in your hands means you will not enjoy your fishing excursion yet fishing is supposed to be fun and exciting. A comfortable reel will help you cast with improved accuracy and will not compromise your effectiveness as an angler. While comfort of the reel depends a lot on your preferences, reels with oversized/extended handles and soft rubber knobs offer better comfortable grip. With an oversized handle, you will also have plenty of torque to winch large fish out.

Braking systems are another feature that often confuses inexperienced anglers who use this type of reel. Basically, the braking system prevents your line from continuing forward after the lure has finished its movement. There are two different type of braking systems out there, although some reels now use a hybrid of the two. These two braking systems are centrifugal brakes and magnetic brakes. Centrifugal brakes use friction to slow down the line and can be adjusted using pins. Magnetic brakes use magnets to slow down spool speed and are adjustable as well. There’s not much difference between the two except for this: centrifugal braking systems are usually easier to set and don’t have to be adjusted as much as magnetic braking systems.

You will have to pay a high price for the accuracy offered by a baitcast reel, although you can get some very nice ones under $100. To increase accuracy, you will have to be focused and stay extremely patient. Frustrations are common for anglers using this reel, but the price is worth every little nuisance. Experienced anglers may not suffer much, because they will have figured out that you must halt the spool as soon as you drop the bait.

The Legend is our best well-rounded pick because of its affordability and above average marks in just about every category. The line and the casting are more than good, frame is sufficient, and the lightness is another perk. A lasting point for this reel has to be its saltwater compatibility. So you’re not stuck to using this reel in just freshwater settings.
The Piscifun Torrent Bait Casting is a fishing reel that’s loaded with features that are normally found in more expensive higher-end models. This model has a 7.1:1 gear ratio that pulls in approximately 30-inches of line per crank and 18-pounds of drag provided by a 3-disc carbon fiber system that gives you the power to pull in bigger fish. This reel also incorporates a magnetic braking system, 5+1 shield bearings, a 4.3-inch extended handle and a durable CNC reinforced brass gear.  It’s a high-quality reel that’s powerful, durable, smooth and reliable and can be used by both freshwater and saltwater fishermen.

You will get different gear ratios between 6.3 and 8.1 to 1. On the lower end, those are very moderate but the high-end reels are blazing fast. Best fished on a medium to slower action rod, these are a powerhouse reel more designed to get fish to the boat rather than play them on the line. Not great for large cats and hard fighters but will nail bass and smaller fish every time.
Intro: It’s been almost a century now the Abu Garcia(originally AB Urfabriken) is in the fishing business after the fishing enthusiastic son of the owner took charge. This famous brand originated in Sweden is now owned by Pure Fishing of the United States. ABU Garcia introduced a series of fishing reels and related products at the beginning of the 1950s.
The quality carbon fiber frame, handle, and side plates are light enough for your hands, though rest assured the durability and strength of the reel are not compromised. The magnetic brake and dynamic six-pin of centrifugal brake are sure to impress anglers. Also, it is ease of use is highly guaranteed - thanks to its 105mm of extended carbon crank handle that provides power and leverage necessary for catching the biggest fish.

Hey Brett, thanks for the note! I’m assuming you’re looking for a starter setup for fishing rivers for Steelhead/Salmon? That said, I’d recommend the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reel I’ve recommended on this page. Typically for Steelhead/Salmon you’ll want a larger baitcaster for long drifts and big runs. The low profile baitcasters are better suited for Bass and smaller trout/salmon (so really depends on what you’re using it for). The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur is the lowest priced reel on this guide, with high quality components that will last many years (over the past 4 years I’ve used this reel in all my Salmon/Steelhead videos on YouTube).

To finish off this list, we're going to go with another popular reel called the Shimano Citica. This reel has been in production for years and has withstood the test of time. With a 7.2:1 high gear ratio and only 7.4 ounces, this is a really I would really like to recommend. It has a very nice line crank of 30 inches and 5 + 1 bearings. It is also available in 6.3:1 as well as right and left hand models. The price point is a bit higher, but also worth it.
To get started with learning to use your baitcasting reel, mount the reel to the rod and string the line through guides. Heavier lines are easier to learn with so use a line with a breaking strength in the upper end of the line range that is recommended for the reel. On the end of your line, tie on a 1/2oz casting weight to practice with instead of a lure. The easiest thing to use as a casting weight would be a lead sinker. Have a few of them in various sizes handy.
