You will undoubtedly experience tangles caused by spool over runs while practicing how to use your baitcasting reel. But, this is how you are going to learn what the spool feels like under your thumb while an over run is occurring so that you can learn how to avoid it. Some of these tangles will be fairly easy to remedy while others, really bad backlashes, will prove much more difficult or even impossible to get out.
On a reel designed for heavy use, you’ll need to make absolutely sure that the body is constructed of a great, solid material. You’ll lessen your chances of breaking this way, and the whole thing will last much longer. Remember though that heavier doesn’t necessarily mean stronger, there’s a lot of innovative, high-tech materials out there that are also extremely light.
I am a die hard Shimano reel fan. While I am pleased to see the Curado make the lineup I am also a little bit shocked that it would make it over the Citica I series. That statement may shock some folks but in my opinion, Shimano has put enough of the premium features into the Citica Series to the point that it is now a Curado I series reel (same weight, size) the only difference being the upgraded bearings in the Curado. For the difference of 30 bucks why not just buy a Citica and upgrade the bearings even further than what the Curado has if that’s the reason you would go with a Curado. All of the reels on the list are great reels! I just think (for the money) the Citica I series is better than the Curado I series! Tight lines everybody!

Because braid is lighter and tighter on a spool and the line diameter is often much smaller than monofilament or fluorocarbon, you can get away with less brakes on your reel, giving you greater distance and better efficiency. So keep that in mind. Turn down the brakes with braid and turn them up slightly with fluoro or mono. Eventually you want to turn them all down to achieve maximum distance.
Along with the Abu Garcia reels, the Shimano Curada has been producing reels for years starting with the 100 and 200 back in 1992 and has withstood the test of time. With a 7.2:1 high gear ratio and 5 S ARB bearings, this thing is as smooth as it can get. The ball bearings are corrosive resistant, so you will never have to worry about replacing them. Coming in at a lightweight 7.4 ounces, this thing is super light. Don't let that fool you though, it can cast like nobody's business, even in the highest of winds! All these features combined allows you to control this baitcaster on every aspect, minimizing the risk for a backlash. It also comes in the LH version for all you left handed baitcaster folks.

The Ambassadeur Morrum ZX-3600 is a best-in-class round bait casting reel by Abu Garcia and one of their few reels that is still made in Sweden. The price point is high on this reel, but you can feel the quality when you pick it up. Made with bass fisherman in mind, the Morrum takes 135 yards of 12lb mono or 30lb braid on its aluminum spool and sends it far out on incredibly smooth, silent casts under the precise control of Abu’s Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake system.
As you inspect a baitcaster, it will give you a maximum drag specification. This number tells you the highest amount of force the drag system can put against the spool. Anglers typically fish between half and ¾ of that number. The higher the max drag, the more force you will be able to place against pulling fish. To set the drag, you either turn a star dial or push a lever.
Shimano Citica retains the proven Shimano technology; it is an exceptional baitcasting reel that has excellent material quality and design. The Shimano Citica features X-Ship for smooth retrieval of your favorite bait coupled with the combination of S3D spool ant the easy-to-manage SVS infinity braking system. Some of the outstanding features baitcasting reels possess includes;
The Piscifun Torrent Bait Casting is a fishing reel that’s loaded with features that are normally found in more expensive higher-end models. This model has a 7.1:1 gear ratio that pulls in approximately 30-inches of line per crank and 18-pounds of drag provided by a 3-disc carbon fiber system that gives you the power to pull in bigger fish. This reel also incorporates a magnetic braking system, 5+1 shield bearings, a 4.3-inch extended handle and a durable CNC reinforced brass gear.  It’s a high-quality reel that’s powerful, durable, smooth and reliable and can be used by both freshwater and saltwater fishermen.
One of the bigger downfalls of baitcasting reels is their inherent tendency to tangle line easily while casting which is referred to as a “backlash”, “birds nest” or “over run”. This occurs because the spool often spins faster than the speed of the line leaving the spool.  This, in turn, causes the line on the spool to loosen and the line leaving the spool becomes jammed in the loose coils of line. This issue can be addressed through the use of the reels spool braking system which will cause the spool of the reel to rotate more slowly during a cast, which helps to control the speed at which line is paid off the spool.

The Lew’s Fishing TPG1SH Tournament Pro G Speed Spool reel offers a one-piece aluminum skeletal frame. It is an excellent baitcasting reel with carbon side plates. It has built-in speed keeper and hooks keeper. The baitcasting reel weighs 6.2 oz., Bearings of 10+1, the Line capacity of 120/12 and gear ratio of 7.5:1 and has an Inches per Turn to be 31″. It is compatible with bass fishing and applicable in both saltwater and freshwater.

Where I see the biggest advantage is when using the flipping or pitching technique. This is when we are fishing at close range and putting the lure into the thickest, heaviest shoreline cover. I like to use 25 lb. Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon when flipping. You may think this is too heavy of a line, but when you hook a big bass in real heavy grass or in the middle of a tree, you need that strength to be able to pull that fish out. Otherwise, the fish can wrap around the cover and break you off.

To finish off this list, we're going to go with another popular reel called the Shimano Citica. This reel has been in production for years and has withstood the test of time. With a 7.2:1 high gear ratio and only 7.4 ounces, this is a really I would really like to recommend. It has a very nice line crank of 30 inches and 5 + 1 bearings. It is also available in 6.3:1 as well as right and left hand models. The price point is a bit higher, but also worth it.
If it's a small spool, you need to be sure you have adequate line for long casts. But consider this: are you casting 60 yards? That's 180 feet. That would be a long, healthy cast. So I've started spooling my reels with less line. Because of this, I don't use backing and now a 250-yard filler spool of line will fill 4 reels instead of 2 1/2. Which in turn, saves me money.
For a bait caster, there could be vast options of baitcasting reels out there. Compared to fishing reels, baitcasting reels aren’t that easy to use. However, they would offer anglers with numbers of significant benefits. And with just less than 100 of your money, you could already get a quality product that could help you catch even the most robust fish.
This is yet another super light-weight baitcasting reel from KastKing. It comes at only 6 ounces featuring durable carbon fiber construction. As such, you can use it for long hours without getting fatigued thereby making casting fun and exciting. Also, it includes hard-forged aluminum gears that claim to offer 7.0:1 gear ratio thereby allowing fast retrieves without sacrificing on the reel’s strength.
This is a great case where the specifications of a reel can be a bit deceptive. A lot of low quality reels might boast a whole lot of bearings, but if they aren’t of high quality you might be better off with half the amount of extremely well made ones. These are especially vital to allow for smooth casting, increasing your accuracy and decreasing your chances of a messy backlash.
Featuring centrifugal brake system, you don’t have to worry about backlashes while retrieving this baitcasting reel's cast. The brakes are easy to access via an open side-plate for quick adjustments. Besides, the reel's main components and the shaft are made of stainless steel while the frame and body from aluminum alloy which guarantees its durability, rigidity and optimal performance. Even better, the construction is corrosion resistant making it easy to maintain the reel.

If you are going after the bigger fish and need a reel that can take on heavier loads, this baitcaster is phenomenal. It’s got a sleek, fantastic design that works as good as it looks. It’s got a gear ratio of 5.4:1 and has extra torque, so you can reel in the catch of the day with hardly any struggle at all – and if that fish is a little feisty, the bent carbon handle won’t get uncomfortable for you.
Maybe you learned to cast when you were a kid with a spincasting reel, or maybe you have taught your own children to fish with such an outfit. At TackleDirect, we offer spincast reels that are very grownup so you can continue to enjoy the ease of this fishing method. Operated with push-button ease, they combine the strengths of spinning and baitcasting reels and are an ideal compromise for those who want the distance and power of a baitcasting reel but don’t want the hassles of backlashes and bird’s nests.
All the Curado reels offer some unique high-tech features like the “SVS Infinity” adjustable braking system that allows precise adjustment of casting resistance according to lure size. Brake adjustment is simple with an easily-accessible knob on the reel side plate. Shimano’s X-Ship technology helps the reel last for many years by protecting the gears. With most reels, the pinion gear is only supported on one end. This leads to stress and wear on the gear train. X-Ship technology puts support on both ends for the pinion gear, adding to durability and increasing power and torque.
