Centrifugal baitcasters use a braking system similar to a car. They will be located underneath the side plates. They are adjusted by adjusting the interior pins, which can be engaged and disengaged. Pins can be engaged and disengaged by pushing them either towards or away from the center. I find centrifugal braking systems to be the far superior system. I suggest starting with a FishDrops 17+1 BB baitcasting reel from Bass Smashers. This model’s interior pins are designed like levers, which make it a baitcaster that is especially accessible for beginners.
Look for quality ceramic or stainless-steel ball bearings in your baitcasting reels. In general. the more bearings a reel has, the smoother it will cast and retrieve. Look for reels that are lightweight and use strong materials like aluminum, magnesium, or carbon composite materials. These are strong and durable materials that will give you the best performance as well as durability.
The easiest way to get the line untangled is to put the reel in free spool and pull line out until you get to where the main line is buried into the line wrapping on the spool. You will most likely find a loose coil of line that creates a loop near the main line. Start working on freeing up the loose line coil first as this is usually the area where the line is buried into the spool. Once you get that coil unknotted, the main line will often be much easier to work free. When there are many loosened coils of line created multiple knots within the spool of line, it is often prudent to simply cut out the line and respool.
The Globeride incorporations manufacturers fishing gears under the brand name Daiwa. It’s a Japanese company founded in 1958 with subsidiaries across the globe. The fishing gears manufactured to account for the majority of sales made by Globeride Inc. its fishing gears are of top quality make and are exported throughout the world. Along with fishing rods and reels, it also manufactures biking, golf, and tennis gears.
The quality carbon fiber frame, handle, and side plates are light enough for your hands, though rest assured the durability and strength of the reel are not compromised. The magnetic brake and dynamic six-pin of centrifugal brake are sure to impress anglers. Also, it is ease of use is highly guaranteed - thanks to its 105mm of extended carbon crank handle that provides power and leverage necessary for catching the biggest fish.
Drag System: The drag system on your reel is something you want to pay attention to when deciding on a reel. Drag is the resistance that is put on the spool when line is being pulled off by running fish. There are key aspects that determine how efficient a drag system is on a reel. A common and harped upon characteristic of drag is the maximum drag pressure. While important to match higher max drag with larger fish, most often any reel is going to be able to apply enough counter pressure to stop a fish from pulling all the line off of your reel and tire it out.
You will get different gear ratios between 6.3 and 8.1 to 1. On the lower end, those are very moderate but the high-end reels are blazing fast. Best fished on a medium to slower action rod, these are a powerhouse reel more designed to get fish to the boat rather than play them on the line. Not great for large cats and hard fighters but will nail bass and smaller fish every time.
And the Revo4 X just has a “better feel” than the Pro Max. It’s hard to explain what I mean by that, except that it feels like a higher quality reel just by using it. And it is a quieter reel than the Pro Max. By and large, Abu Garcia baitcasting reels aren’t the quietest on the market. In my opinion, they tend not to be quiet reels. But the Revo4 X is definitely quieter than the Pro Max and the Black Max, by far.
The aircraft grade aluminum spool provides 35 percent more line capacity than the brand’s freshwater equivalent so that you can use a heavier line to target more powerful saltwater species. Other highlights include Daiwa’s Magforce Cast Control and wide T-Wing aperture (which helps to reduce line angles and friction). Available in right and left-handed models, the reel weighs in at 8.1 ounces and features a 100mm swept handle with non-slip EVA knobs.
Eleven ball bearings make for flawlessly smooth casting and retrieval. The centrifugal braking system features 27 adjustable positions, while the carbon fiber handle comes with two custom EVA foam cork knobs. The reel has a high gear ratio of 6.8:1. Patented Lew’s innovations include the Speed Dial line indicator (to keep track of what line type and weight has been spooled) and a retractable hook keeper.
Abu Garcia is one the well-known brands that have been manufacturing fishing gear including spinning reels and baitcasting reels for a number of years. They have a long line of baitcasting reels and this model is one of their best and inexpensive innovations. At 7.4 ounces, this reel is lightweight and portable. It, therefore, makes a great reel for anglers who like casting for extended hours because it does not cause fatigue.
Baitcasters are better at catching larger fish as they are suitable for fishing with heavier baits and lines that are more massive. The heavier baits allow the angler to fish at higher speeds. You can take full advantage of baits like Spinner and Crankbaits. The stronger lines are great for larger fish like the bass. You can put more pressure on the line without fear of it breaking.
Loosen the tension more. Now you are going to have to thumb harder at the very start of the release. You are still letting the line spin under your thumb but you have a bit more pressure because the startup inertia of the spool is going to be initially faster than the lure is going to pull the line off of the reel. You have to control that with early pressure then back off your thumb as the lure gets farther from you. This will take training your thumb.
These are lightweight and compact reels coming in at 6.7oz. While lightweight they still offer some durability and ruggedness with aluminum alloy frames and carbon composite side plates. This gives you a very comfortable reel that makes casting all day a lot easier. There is plenty of cranking power available and the gear design and supporting structures allow it to function beautifully under duress of an aggressive fish.
It has a low profile design that’s also light thanks to its graphite side plate and one-piece frame. It also has reliable operation thanks to its four stainless steel ball bearings and its one roller bearing. This model also has very nice castability and nice drag thanks to its Power Disk drag system and its MagTrax brake system. Its bent handle and recessed reel foot also make it a very ergonomic choice for both the amateur and professional fisherman alike.
The Shimano Curado I Reel is a silver-gray caster that’s considered by some anglers to be an improvement over previous Curado reels. It has a low-profile design that only weighs around 7-ounces or so but is able to handle up to 12-pounds of drag. It’s designed so that it can cast as smoothly as any of the higher end reels, as well as retrieve the line with it being capable of retrieving up to 26-inches of line per crank. Other features of this reel include an S3D spool design, an SVS Infinity braking system and S A-RB bearings which are shielded to protect against sand and saltwater. It’s a reel that handles both inshore and offshore fishing duties well.
Picking the right line for your is very important for you to have a pleasant time using your baitcasting reel. The wrong line will lead to a lot of frustration, as there is only so much a good casting technique can ‘save’. There are a couple of things you need to learn before knowing what is the right line for you. If you haven’t got a line for your baitcaster yet, or if you’ve followed the guidelines below and still get birds nests, you need to read my in-depth guide on finding the right baitcasting line, where I recommend the best lines you can buy.
The 13 Fishing Concept A wins most versatile due to its usability in both freshwater and saltwater environments. The Concept A is made out of a durable lightweight aluminum. Small and compact it palms in your hand perfectly. The reel weighs 6.7oz and has a matte-black finish. It has 7 ball bearings (3 anti-corrosion, 3 stainless steel, and a Dead Stop Anti-Reverse ball bearing) making it useable for light inshore applications. This reel is smooth as butter and bombs lures far. The Concept A sits low on your rod which reduces friction improving casting distance.
Hey Brett, thanks for the note! I’m assuming you’re looking for a starter setup for fishing rivers for Steelhead/Salmon? That said, I’d recommend the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reel I’ve recommended on this page. Typically for Steelhead/Salmon you’ll want a larger baitcaster for long drifts and big runs. The low profile baitcasters are better suited for Bass and smaller trout/salmon (so really depends on what you’re using it for). The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur is the lowest priced reel on this guide, with high quality components that will last many years (over the past 4 years I’ve used this reel in all my Salmon/Steelhead videos on YouTube).
