Round reels generally hold more line and are capable of holding a heavier line. They are often also used for fights which require long runs or for tossing bigger baits. It’s generally good for salmon, muskies, and steelhead. Low-profile reels are more ergonomic and allow for a better ‘wristing’ of the line. It’s also one of the more popular reels used today. This type of reel is generally used for crappie and bass.
From freshwater to saltwater, there are a lot of great baitcasting reels hitting the market now, and they come in two main styles – round and low-profile oval – and a broad price range. CT stands for compact tatula. A remodel of the original but is more compact and ergonomic. Made from a new aluminum frame which is stronger, more durable, and lighter weighing only 7.2oz (approximately half an ounce lighter than the original). The Type R is a suped-up version of the Tatula CT. It comes with an additional 2 CRBB bearings, and a lighter spool making it lighter than the CT.
The mechanism of working of the gear ratio is simple and this just how easy it works. If the reel has a gear ratio of 5:0, it implies that the spool turns five times when you rotate the handle once. This means that the higher the first number of the ratio, the quicker the lure is pulled back to you. Different ratios are best suited for different types of lures. A gear ratio of 5:1 is generally regarded to be the average with 4:1 and 6:1 considered to be slow and very fast respectively. A slower gear ratio as low as 3:1 is recommended to be best suited for diving crankbaits and large spinnerbaits. An average speed gear ratio of 5:1 is recommended for Texas rigs, soft plastics and jigs while for other lures and some spinnerbaits, a pretty fast gear ratio of 6:1nto 7:1 should be considered.

The 7.0:1 gear ratio makes the KastKing a super smooth and efficient baitcaster. A little bit heavier than the Abu Garcia Revo SX, but you can't tell the difference at 7.5 oz. It is a much cheaper reel than others and you can definitely feel that it's not made as well as others. Plan on this one not lasting as long as other reels that are more durable. This reel has 11+1 ball bearings and super smooth reel for pitching, flipping and more. State of the art dual brakes make this baitcaster ready to go fishing right out of the box. The price point makes this a good purchase. It's an affordable reel if you are wanting to get into baitcasting like the professionals. Definitely a good reel to get for beginners before they move to a more durable reel.
With its D2 Gear design and fuel-efficient X-Craftic amalgam contour. The reel offers sufficient equipment quality and toughness to withstand even the most stringent conditions. With its carbon matrix braking system, this bait-casting reel provides luxurious air drag throughout the entire length of the train. So you get the precision and power you need to choke hard-pulling fish.
Since every bait cast reel comes with a complete mechanism, braking systems are also included. They are responsible for adjusting the rotation of the spool when you are casting, so that it does not get out of hand. Otherwise, if it did not exist, you would forever be experiencing backlash (the knotted line that remains with you when the spool continues revolving, even after the lure stops moving forward).

A: Baitcasting reels have a bad reputation for being prone to backlashing when casting and being difficult to learn so why would anyone want to use a baitcasting reel? A baitcast reel is highly versatile and the ideal choice of fishing reel for a variety of fishing situations and techniques. Experienced anglers also prefer baitcast reels for the following reasons:

The reel is small enough to be palmed and feels great in your hand, with a thick, cold-forged handle that is perfectly curved to clear the star drag wheel as it turns the 5.6:1 gear ratio and gives you exacting control over retrieve speed. A stainless steel knob lets you adjust the 20-point cast-control system for precision with any lure or in any condition. The anti-reverse uses a one-way roller bearing that eliminates all back-play to give instant hook setting power.

SR: For someone new to baitcasting reels, make sure that there is a magnetic brake control on the palm of the reel and that it fits comfortably in your hand when attached to the rod. There are a lot of reels that have either magnetic brakes or centrifugal brakes, which are located inside the palm plate of the reel and require you to take the plate off in order to adjust the brake. There is nothing wrong with this! It’s just a matter of preference or manufacturer design. My thought is that if you’re starting out, get a reel such as my Wright & McGill Victory 11 Casting Reel that has the external brake system for quick and easy adjustments. As you become better and need less adjustments, you can go to a reel that has internal brakes.

Designed for all levels of baitcasters, this reel claims to offer everything that you need in a baitcast and at a very low price without compromising its performance. For starters, it features 5+1 stainless steel bearings that provide the reel with superior smoothness when casting. The bearing’s stainless steel construction gives them increased resistant to corrosion to lengthen their life.

The Lew’s Fishing Tournament MB Baitcast reel is lightweight with dual-braking MSB and in available in dual hand orientation. The baitcasting reel weighs 6.7oz, with a line capacity of 12/120, Bearings of 9BB+1RB, and the Gear ratio of 5.6:1. All these great features culminate to make the Lew’s Fishing Tournament MB Baitcast reel an excellent reel for your fishing game.
Personally I use a spinning reel when casting for species such as pike and asp, fishing for perch and fishing vertical. When I would be trolling for pike with larger lures, I switch to the baitcaster. When setting it in a rod rest I use a longer, more flexible rod and when keeping the rod in hands, I prefer a shorter, somewhat stiffer baitcaster rod. It is purely a matter of personal taste because I believe a traditional rod and spinning reel won’t catch less.
Along with the Abu Garcia reels, the Shimano Curada has been producing reels for years starting with the 100 and 200 back in 1992 and has withstood the test of time. With a 7.2:1 high gear ratio and 5 S ARB bearings, this thing is as smooth as it can get. The ball bearings are corrosive resistant, so you will never have to worry about replacing them. Coming in at a lightweight 7.4 ounces, this thing is super light. Don't let that fool you though, it can cast like nobody's business, even in the highest of winds! All these features combined allows you to control this baitcaster on every aspect, minimizing the risk for a backlash. It also comes in the LH version for all you left handed baitcaster folks.

Keep casting the same weight until you can consistently achieve a decent distance without experiencing line tangles. You can then practice with different weights remembering to reset the brake tension with every new weight you tie to the line. You will find that casting heavier weights using your baitcasting reel is easier than casting lighter weights.

Abu Garcia is one the well-known brands that have been manufacturing fishing gear including spinning reels and baitcasting reels for a number of years. They have a long line of baitcasting reels and this model is one of their best and inexpensive innovations. At 7.4 ounces, this reel is lightweight and portable. It, therefore, makes a great reel for anglers who like casting for extended hours because it does not cause fatigue.

I teamed it up with 50 lb spider wire handled it perfect. I bought 125 years and there was quite a lot still on the spool. This is a perfect reel for the lighter musky stuff how will it handle a musky, we will see. How will it hold up? We will see. It is user friendly. My big musky reels and rods take there toll on my arms. If this reel holds up for one season fishing once a week 11 hours a day, I will be happy. If I get 2 years I will be in pardise.
