I resort to spinning reels mainly in the spring when bass are in the shallows and finesse tactics seem to work best. I also switch to spinning reels on windy winter days for casting suspending stickbaits because baitcasters tend to backlash too much when throwing those lightweight plugs into the wind. Some of my favorite finesse tactics I use with spinning tackle are wacky-rigging Senkos, shaking a finesse worm with a shaky head jig, skipping tube jigs and drop-shotting.
What I learned personally with this reel, it’s more suitable for beginner anglers. Those who are casting for the first time should invest in this reel for honing their abilities. You could get a year out of this baby if you treat it with care. Expert anglers will not be impressed with this reel for lacking in a few advanced technologies. But, from the price point perspective, you can’t go wrong with the reel.
The sophisticated braking systems and anti-backlash mechanisms on today’s baitcasters make it easy for anyone to learn how to cast these reels without worrying about line overruns. Some reels have a brake dial for adjusting the centrifugal brake system while others, such as the Ardent baitcasters Ponds uses, have internal centrifugal brake pins that need to be pulled out to engage the brakes. With plenty of practice in the right settings, any beginner can head out on the water with the confidence of having a backlash-free day.

Spinning reels are engineered for casting light baits ( which is not the case for every spinning reel), but with a baitcaster, the possibilities are endless. You can do Deep crankbaits, Big swimbait, Deepwater swimbaits, squarebill crankbaits, shallow spinnerbaits, Texas Rigs, Carolina Rigs, jerk baits, topwater etc with a baitcaster. (Note, specific bait presentation requires specific gear ratio).
Designed especially with inshore anglers in mind, the Daiwa Coastal-TWS 200 baitcasting reel is made to withstand exposure to saltwater with eight corrosion-resistant ball bearings. These last approximately 12 times longer than standard stainless steel ball bearings and combine with the reel’s high-strength gears to increase its overall longevity. The reel has a maximum drag of 15.4 pounds and a fast 7.3:1 gear ratio.
All in all, this baitcaster is a solid all around performer for under $100 that will last for years. It comes from a well-known and respected manufacturer in Shimano. If you are looking for a happy medium between speed and power, and want a good all-around fishing reel, this reel will be the way to go. This baitcasting reel is available for both left and right handers. For all of these reasons, the Shimano Caenan is the best baitcasting reel under 100 dollars in our opinion
This reel’s real beauty lies in its ability to increase your casting distance as well as accuracy. You can customize your casting so that the line and lure hit your preferred location. Mostly because of the famous MagTrax braking system, which is included in this reel. It makes sure that there is consistent and nonstop braking pressure being put on the reel, throughout the entire casting process.
The braking system uses a magnetic system that is tight and efficient. Any time you have a system that depends on friction specifically there’s warrant for replacement, but the Metanium is going to last you. On top of this is the Shimano’s multiple gear settings. So here’s the use in that: the MGL150 is a great freshwater reel because it gives the strength and versatility to deal with the small-to-large range of fish you’re going to find in the varying freshwater areas of the US. Also, this gives the angler the ability to choose how he fishes, how it feels to fish, and what he can catch.
Hold your rod approximately at the 1 o'clock position; release the spool to allow the weight to drop. Adjust the brake mechanism so that the coil stops rotating when the weight hits the ground. This setting reduces the likelihood of a game when you first cast. Once you can handle your baitcast reel with this setting, you can pull back on the brakes to increase the throwing distance.
The easiest way to get the line untangled is to put the reel in free spool and pull line out until you get to where the main line is buried into the line wrapping on the spool. You will most likely find a loose coil of line that creates a loop near the main line. Start working on freeing up the loose line coil first as this is usually the area where the line is buried into the spool. Once you get that coil unknotted, the main line will often be much easier to work free. When there are many loosened coils of line created multiple knots within the spool of line, it is often prudent to simply cut out the line and respool.
A great braking system is important with baitcasters as this will help prevent the brutal backlashes or “birds nest”. A backlash is when the spool over rotates after the lure has hit the water and these additional rotations cause the fishing line to bunch up on the reel. A good braking system will slow the spool down just before the end of the cast to ensure these additional rotations do not occur.
I teamed it up with 50 lb spider wire handled it perfect. I bought 125 years and there was quite a lot still on the spool. This is a perfect reel for the lighter musky stuff how will it handle a musky, we will see. How will it hold up? We will see. It is user friendly. My big musky reels and rods take there toll on my arms. If this reel holds up for one season fishing once a week 11 hours a day, I will be happy. If I get 2 years I will be in pardise.
