You’ll want to make sure that the reel you purchase has the right gear ratio for your needs. You’ll want something higher geared for smaller fish in order to make a quick retrieval, but a lower gear is ideal for when you’re hunting monsters. The typical measurements you’ll see are quite easy to read, it’s simply how many times the small gear turns compared to the large one attached to your handle. For instance a 6:1 ratio means the smaller gear will turn six total times for one crank of the handle.
The Abu Garcia Classic round baitcaster comes in a few reel models: C3, C4 & C. Each of these models has a handful of sizes so there is no shortage of options for any fishing application. The Abu Garcia C3-6500 was the first baitcaster I ever owned. I’ve fished this reel hard for many years and I still use it today! That said, I dissemble the reel, clean and grease it each winter which has kept it like new. The price point and specs for this reel have made it mandatory for my list.
It is worthy of note that irrespective of the breaking system that comes with the baitcaster reel, learning to how to thumb the spool perfectly is very important and it is pivotal to having a hassle-free casting. The magnetic system seems more complicated and you may want to fit the centrifugal type if you feel it could be difficult for you to operate.
The KastKing Rover Round Baitcasting Reel has a lot of unique features which makes it to be a top pick for most fishermen and to be top rated. It features carbon fiber star drag system (up to 20 LB / 9 KG), 3.6:1 gear ratio, and six premium shielded stainless steel ball bearings (6 + 1 BBs on Size 40 – 60, 4 + 1 BBs on 70 – 90). It also features a line out clicker alarm 2-pin centrifugal brakes which provides a constant pressure at each cast and weighs 15.8 ounces
With a pro-caliber performance and reasonable price-tag, the Daiwa Tatula CT Type-R Baitcast Reel is a great all-rounder for freshwater angling. It features an ergonomic low profile design, as well as a rugged gear train protected by a super lightweight aluminum frame and side plate. Highlights include the Magforce Z Cast Control System and a hybrid levelwind equipped with Daiwa’s signature T-Wing aperture. The former allows for pinpoint accuracy across a wide range of different lures.

Eleven ball bearings make for flawlessly smooth casting and retrieval. The centrifugal braking system features 27 adjustable positions, while the carbon fiber handle comes with two custom EVA foam cork knobs. The reel has a high gear ratio of 6.8:1. Patented Lew’s innovations include the Speed Dial line indicator (to keep track of what line type and weight has been spooled) and a retractable hook keeper.
You may have to spend some time mastering a baitcasting reel, but once you have put in the practice time needed, a good baitcasting reel will offer you unparalleled precision and excellent distance on your casts. By controlling the free spin of the reel, you can drop your bait or lure with pin-point accuracy. Overall, casting with this type of reel is more efficient than dealing with the bail and line on a spinning reel, and that is why you see the pros flipping and retrieving so many casts in such a short periods of time.
13 Fishing has always been kind of a “hype” company to me, making pretty products and splashy marketing. However, over several years of being made, it has become impossible to ignore the popularity of their proven Concept A reel. It’s a sexy matte black baitcaster with great looking cork knobs. No doubt they can design a god looking reel, but does it pass the test?
Bait-casting reels are often called casting reels and they're well suited for a lot of different kinds of fishing tasks. They sit on top of the rod and the line comes off a revolving spool. Bait-casters are a little more difficult to learn to cast and are famous for getting backlash, or a bird's nest, in the line. Prices range from very cheap to extremely expensive but there are a lot of moderately priced bait-casting reels that will last a long time.
The centrifugally-braked C3 does not cast as far as some of the little magnetic cast low-profile reels, but you are not likely to see them going up against big striped bass or blue catfish. This reel puts the heavy cranking power of the Abu Duragear system together with a smooth 15lb carbon matrix drag to generate some real torque. The massive star drag wheel and old-school metal level wind system add to the bomb-proof appearance of the C3.
When deciding on the break, there are two types you can choose from; the centrifugal and the magnetic breaking system.  The centrifugal breaking system depends on the friction and centrifugal force and uses pins inside the side plate of the reel to function. The pins extend out when there is increased speed of the spool’s rotation. Therefore, to apply the break in this system, you will have to push the pins to the outside. For magnetic breaking system, its mechanism of work is rather quite different all though depends on the magnet and spool to function.
Designed for all levels of baitcasters, this reel claims to offer everything that you need in a baitcast and at a very low price without compromising its performance. For starters, it features 5+1 stainless steel bearings that provide the reel with superior smoothness when casting. The bearing’s stainless steel construction gives them increased resistant to corrosion to lengthen their life.
If you’re well acquainted with baitcaster reels and try the Luna, one of the first things you’ll notice is the ease and extra distance when casting. This is the free floating spool structure that removes the spool pinion from the gear train (reduced friction). This allows the spool to spin quicker and longer for those long bomb casts. Additionally, the casting speed is easily adjusted by pressing and turning the sideplate. Most reels will have a separate knob for this functionality; to me the sideplate adjustment is more intuitive.
The Calcutta offers 6 models so there is a reel for the ultra-light to heavier gear applications. I’m a big fan of having multiple model options, as I’ll often buy a smaller or larger version of the same reel once I’ve put it to the test. I’ve pounded Calcutta’s on the rivers and I love them. These reels are long term investments to me as they’ll last a lifetime when properly taken care of.

Baitcasters are better at catching larger fish as they are suitable for fishing with heavier baits and lines that are more massive. The heavier baits allow the angler to fish at higher speeds. You can take full advantage of baits like Spinner and Crankbaits. The stronger lines are great for larger fish like the bass. You can put more pressure on the line without fear of it breaking.

By giving up on a baitcast reel, novices are missing out on the most effective tool for presenting their lures to bass.  “It is so much easier feathering your lure and getting accuracy and distance,” says Bassmaster Elite Series competitor Pete Ponds.  “All three of those factors make the baitcaster more appealing than the spinning reel.  There are times for spinning reels and you can feather them as well but distance and accuracy are two very important elements of the cast and with the baitcaster I feel like I can achieve both better than I can with the spinning reel.”

Fortunately, we can help you with finding the best reel. Below is an easy-to-follow list that has some of the better ones on the market today. These models were chosen because of their design specifications, their ease-of-use and their ability to get the job done. Of course, if you are still looking for a primer on how to choose a caster, there is also a section after the list of top reels that will help teach you some of the things you should be looking for in one of these reels.
The Daiwa Lexa is a reel with a 7.1:1 gear ratio, an aluminum side plate and frame and a retrieve rate of 32.4-feet per crank. It’s a professional grade system that has quite a few design features that allow it to really reel in the big fish. This model has an over-sized swept handle with weight-reducing cutouts that doesn’t adversely affect its strength or its leverage. Another great feature of this reel is that it has sealed CRBB bearings that are designed to keep out sand and salt crystals. And these bearings are also specially treated to resist salt corrosion better than non-treated bearings. This gives it the ability to perform better longer in saltwater environments than some of its competitors.

This reel is very comfortable and you can fish with it all day without fatigue. It has the features and specs for a smooth operation and the strength for fighting strong and fast fish. Its action is very smooth, which is very surprising given its affordable price. The high number of quality bearings, medium gear ratio and powerful drag ensure precise and long distance casting, smooth retrievals, very smooth drag, and a fast retrieve.
All the Curado reels offer some unique high-tech features like the “SVS Infinity” adjustable braking system that allows precise adjustment of casting resistance according to lure size. Brake adjustment is simple with an easily-accessible knob on the reel side plate. Shimano’s X-Ship technology helps the reel last for many years by protecting the gears. With most reels, the pinion gear is only supported on one end. This leads to stress and wear on the gear train. X-Ship technology puts support on both ends for the pinion gear, adding to durability and increasing power and torque.

One thing that stands out about this reel is the handle size, which seems large in comparison to the reel body. However, it is very comfortable to use. On the downside, the anodizing on the crank nut showed scarring after one removal of the handle. Stainless steel would be better there. But for the price, the overall fit and finish on the reel is good, and this smooth-rolling, long-casting reel fills our number 9 slot.
I have owned many reels, to include many that were much more expensive than this. I have found this real to be equal to if not better than every reel I have ever owned. The action is smooth, the drag is as promised, and the build quality is greater than expected. You truly cannot go wrong with this reel. My boys and I now own 6 of these reels as well as KastKing spinning reels. I do not see myself ever purchasing a brand of reel besides KastKing. They have yet to let me down in any way and I for one appreciate their great products at more than fair prices.
