If you’re just getting started in baitcasting and looking for your very first baitcaster, there is a learning curve and you will have to deal with some nasty backlashes that might make you question whether baitcasting is for you. But with patience and practice, you will soon be able to fine tune the controls, thumb the spool like a pro, cast smoothly throwing lures far away and with pinpoint accuracy and have a lot of fun.
Finally, the Curado’s perfectly balanced Super Free spool gives you smooth, long casts by removing spool shaft friction. In regular baitcasting reels, the pinion gear is freed when the clutch bar is pressed, and the gear then drags on the spool shaft. This results in friction that can shorten casting distance. The Super Free spool uses a ball bearing to support the pinion gear, keeping the gear and the spool shaft perfectly aligned when the clutch is disengaged and reducing the friction to zero.
You will find the most common ratio being 6.4:1, which allows an angler to make both slow-moving presentations, as well as fast ones. Certain applications will, however, require you to use lower gear ratios or very high gear ratios. For instance, when you decide to use a buzz bait, you will need a reel with a ratio of 7.1:1. Crankbaits on the other hand, are more effective with slower gear ratios like 5.4:1.
If you’re on the market for a stylish reel, look no further. This beauty comes finished in midnight black with electric blue accents. It comes equipped with more high-end features than most luxury cars. It’s aero grade aluminum spool, 6.3:1 ratio gears which are precision matched, instant stop anti-reverse, 11+1 corrosion resistant completely shielded MaxiDur ball bearings are just a few of the features this reel comes equipped with. But that’s not all, this reel comes with some serious stopping power. It’s 16.5 pound drag will stop even the largest of fish in their tracks. Just because this reel is stronger than a cows hide doesn’t mean it weighs a ton. This is one of the lightest baitcasting reels currently on the market coming in at only 5.7 ounces. This guarantees you’ll be able to fish all day without finding yourself even the slightest bit fatigued.
There is an argument to be made on the shape of these guides to enable efficient line guidance off the reel. Daiwa uses their patented T-Wing System where the guide is shaped like a T, it creates a wide section (top part of the T) when line is exiting and a narrow (bottom part of the T) when the line is returning. Anyway, don’t get too hung up on the shape but make sure the guide is made from a quality/strong metal.
The magnetic braking system is another big plus here, making this reel ideal for those who aren’t sure how to contend with a centrifugal braking system just yet. It will allow you to easily make an accurate cast with a constant slow-down through the whole motion by slowing the reel. Once you have it set properly for your tackle, the consistent pressure will allow for easy and laser accurate casts.

Baitcasters are a great reel option that will increase your versatility while fishing. While they allow you to cover more water and cast more efficiently, the learning curve often leaves beginners experiencing a lot of backlash. Be sure to get a quality baitcaster, preferably one with a centrifugal reel. And, remember to get out and practice with your baitcaster as much as possible!
It has a low profile design that’s also light thanks to its graphite side plate and one-piece frame. It also has reliable operation thanks to its four stainless steel ball bearings and its one roller bearing. This model also has very nice castability and nice drag thanks to its Power Disk drag system and its MagTrax brake system. Its bent handle and recessed reel foot also make it a very ergonomic choice for both the amateur and professional fisherman alike.
I go fishing a few times a week, and was looking for another reel to have another baitcaster setup. I currently have 2 Abu Garcia BlackMax 6.4:1 reels and some spinning setups, but was looking at trying something different. Between the high rating and the price, I thought I'd give this a try. The KastKing was not only $20+ cheaper, but also outperforms the Abu Garcias on every level - Less backlashes, smoother reeling, further casting distances. I'm just so happy with this reel, and can't wait to try out some of the other ones and ratios from KastKing.
