Another benefit of this tool is more control and better bait placement. Often, bass fishing requires you to place the bait in a precise location. This accurate placement can be awkward due to lack of control. Once you have this big fish on the hook, you have a better chance of landing it due to the increased leverage as the reel sits closer to the pole.
Keep practice casting until you can cast that casting weight 30 – 50 feet without a backlash. Once you get relatively comfortable with casting the ½oz casting weight replace it with a 3/4oz or 1oz casting weight. Remember, every time that you change to a lure of a different weight, you will need to readjust your brake. Run through the vertical dropping drill that you performed before you started casting the 1/2oz casting weight. Once the brake is adjusted, start practice casting with the heavier casting weight. You will notice how much further you can cast because of the weight of the casting weight even though you are casting at the same moderate power that you had been earlier. Generally, heavier lures are easier to cast on baitcasting gear.
The Lew’s Fishing Tournament MB Baitcast reel is lightweight with dual-braking MSB and in available in dual hand orientation. The baitcasting reel weighs 6.7oz, with a line capacity of 12/120, Bearings of 9BB+1RB, and the Gear ratio of 5.6:1. All these great features culminate to make the Lew’s Fishing Tournament MB Baitcast reel an excellent reel for your fishing game.
This is a no-nonsense build quality from KastKing. The integrated hard forged aluminum gears, aircraft grade aluminum spool and carbon fiber handle with EVA knobs for smooth reel performance as well as greater convenience. The number of nifty features and special ability of these reels has truly placed it under the best baitcasting reels for the money.
When you do make the plunge and decide to buy a baitcaster, you need to take into consideration a few variables such as will you be using it in freshwater or saltwater environments? Do you need a right-handed or left-handed reel and what type fish are you going to be targeting while angling? Going through baitcasting reel reviews will help determine which equipment is best for you and what things you need to look for when choosing to invest in a baitcaster.
SKEET REESE: Without a doubt, it’s the backlash factor. When you don’t control the spool speed properly with your thumb, or when you release the lure at the wrong time, the line will want to come off the spool while the spool is still spinning, but will end up staying on the reel. [This] creates an overrun of line that turns into a “birds nest” or “backlash.” Think of it as putting a spool of thread on a pencil, then yanking the thread without controlling the spool. It will get tangled.
This reel features a machined aluminum spool which is deep and can hold as heavy and lengthy as the possible line. Therefore, with this feature, you wouldn’t have to be bothered about not having enough line or space to hold them, especially when going out to get a large fish. Having an aluminum spool and drag system also makes this reel a good fit for fresh water fishing.
The centrifugal brake utilizes (as the name reveals) centrifugal force to slow down the spinning spool using small pins attached to the side of the spool. To adjust your centrifugal brakes, you must first uncover the pins by removing a side panel located on the opposite side of the reel as your reel handle. Do you see the pins? Good, now the only thing you need to know right now, is that the way you adjust this type of brake is by flicking some of the pins away from the center of the spool. I will go over exactly what setting to use under How to adjust/tune your baitcasting reel further below.

Also known as the conventional reel, Baitcasters are suitable for experienced anglers to achieve better accuracy and overall control. You can target bigger fish because of numerous features and tweaks the Baitcaster offers. The operation of a Baitcasting reel is similar to the spinning reel. Once you cast the line comes off the spool and through the guides. Now let’s see how individual component operates within the reel.
Braking System: The braking system determines how much line you cast. More brakes mean less casting distance and less of a total arc – effectively this gives more control to the caster, yet impedes the size of casting arcs. Less brakes would have the opposite effect, improving casting distance, but losing some of the control heavier brakes can offer. A proper braking system is key to one of the few actions essential to baitcast fishing – casting.
Made out of one piece of aluminum the reel weighs in at only 6.7 ounces which makes it very easy to palm and very comfortable to use. The reel uses lew's multi braking system which features both a magnetic cast control which is adjusted externally via a click-dial) and an internal 4-pin position on/off centrifugal braking system which does require you to take down the side-plate to adjust.
Here’s another Shimano added to the list. This one has the same aluminum frame as the Curado and a new introduced spool system which claims higher casting distance. It doesn’t take much digging to figure out how good Shimano has made it for anglers in recent years, and this year is no different. The Metanium shows a lot of promise as a great freshwater baitcasting reel.

The 7.0:1 gear ratio makes the KastKing a super smooth and efficient baitcaster. A little bit heavier than the Abu Garcia Revo SX, but you can't tell the difference at 7.5 oz. It is a much cheaper reel than others and you can definitely feel that it's not made as well as others. Plan on this one not lasting as long as other reels that are more durable. This reel has 11+1 ball bearings and super smooth reel for pitching, flipping and more. State of the art dual brakes make this baitcaster ready to go fishing right out of the box. The price point makes this a good purchase. It's an affordable reel if you are wanting to get into baitcasting like the professionals. Definitely a good reel to get for beginners before they move to a more durable reel.
For the price, this reel has a lower gear ratio of 4.7:1. But because of its big spool, users can enjoy fast line retrieve. In addition, the reel includes CNC machined aluminum handle. The handle is collapsible with left/ right interchangeable feature and a soft touch for a comfortable grip. Also, the handle is lightweight hence you can use the reel all day without worrying about fatigue.

Baitcasters are all about lightweight reels and are typically made from aluminum or graphite. Aluminum has more grit but is heavier than the graphite, whereas the graphite is lighter but won’t hold up to a lot of abuse. Whichever balance you like in materials, I recommend looking for a one-piece frame made of a single material (best would be one-piece aluminum frame for the strength).

The Shimano Caenan is a beautiful reel that offers outstanding performance. It is clearly a very aesthetically pleasing baitcaster, but it also is a great value as a reel itself. With a retrieve ratio of 6.5:1, it is a fairly quick reeling reel, though not the quickest. This makes it ideal for lures that shouldn’t be reeled too quickly and actually make it an ideal option for the vast majority of fisherman.

The fishing performance is as refined as the reel. Lew’s reels usually exhibit great casting, and the Pro Mag is no exception. Great casting comes from double shielded ball bearings, an audible tension clicker, and a killer 27 point, externally adjustable centrifugal braking system. Throw in an integral bait keep and line size indicator, and you have one heck of a baitcaster.
Just start by incrementally increasing the power of your cast. You may start to feel as if the reel cannot cast any further, yet your casts are still falling short. Simply loosen the brake just a hair and attempt the same cast. You’ll find that you gain distance but you’re starting to get some tangles. After pulling the knots out, compose yourself, and recast with a little more thumb pressure applied. Try to be aware of the feel of the line under your thumb during the cast and try to stop the line with your thumb as the casting weight hits the ground. You will quickly gain a feel for the way your baitcaster behaves depending on how hard you cast and the size of the casting weight you are using.
Spool Tension Knob: The spool tension knob is like a smaller braking system kept inside the main braking system. You can think of this part as the gears on a bicycle. Where the braking system slows down the overall movement of the whole bike, a spool tension knob adjusts the cadence of the pedaling. Another way to describe it, more directly perhaps, is that a spool tension knob determines spool speed. A braking system keeps you from casting too much line, a tension knob controls how fast that line comes out. This is one of the more challenging parts of a baitcasting reel for beginners to pick up, but boosts performance quite a lot.
Lightweight drilled aluminum spool offers phenomenal line grip and Magforce magnetic system provide backlash-free control. The reel has the ability to fight resistant fish with its twin-system endless anti-reverse. For further smoother operation, Daiwa installed 5 stainless steel ball bearings and a single roller bearing. It just offers enough feature to perform optimally.
Now it is time check if the brake settings suit you! You will only know this after making some casts, so now it’s time to go fishing! If you’re far away from the nearest water but still want to practice, you could try to find an open field (this is often a good idea when practicing, because it is easier to focus on technique and best practice when there are no chance of catching fish).
Low profile baitcaster reels vs. the round baitcaster are very similar but the primary difference is the size. Low profile is the smaller, lighter reel and the round reel is larger and heavier. Low profile baitcasters are certainly the most popular for the typical fisherman. Here are some quick Pros / Cons for Low profile vs. Round Baitcasting reels.

One thing that stands out about this reel is the handle size, which seems large in comparison to the reel body. However, it is very comfortable to use. On the downside, the anodizing on the crank nut showed scarring after one removal of the handle. Stainless steel would be better there. But for the price, the overall fit and finish on the reel is good, and this smooth-rolling, long-casting reel fills our number 9 slot.
Being called one of the most popular baitcasters year after year, the Revo SX has shown to impress myself with its durability and ultimate control while fishing. I have reeled in so many bass with this fishing reel. Combined with the sturdy Vendetta rod, this combo can be sick! Buy both the rod and reel and you will have a nice setup for years to come. You are getting a very good combo for the money. This rod and reel is for both beginners and more advanced fisherman. They are both super lightweight with the alloy and carbon reel coming in at only 6.6 oz. It has 10 bearings with a 7.1:1 gear ratio and comes in both a right and left hand model. There are multiple generations of these reel and I'm amazed how they continue to reduce the weight each year.
