If you’re an angler who plans on fishing for a while or let’s say you’re a veteran, and you’ve seen the worst of it, the simple fact is that your reel needs to last. Moreover, your reel needs to stand the worst conditions that can be thrown at it. If you’re someone who agrees with this, you’re not alone, Shimano has heard your call and made a nice long lasting reel to be an anglers friend.
Faster gear ratios are not always the best option as there is a tradeoff. As gear ratios increase, the cranking power often goes down. What you go with all depends on the style of fishing and the type of fish you plan on catching. You’re going to want a reel with a lot of cranking power if you are going after larger saltwater species, while if you plan on ripping crankbaits and spinnerbaits for bass, you will be more inclined to go with a higher gear ratio.

It was kind of a disappointment from the start. My fingers had a hard time adjusting the spool tensioner on the left (craking) side. Then the tensioner wouldn’t stay adjusted. This turned out to be rubber discs in the tensioner caps on both sides so I ditched those (all while at the water mind you) for round discs cut from a plastic milk container. This seemed to help a good bit over the rubber.
This reel’s real beauty lies in its ability to increase your casting distance as well as accuracy. You can customize your casting so that the line and lure hit your preferred location. Mostly because of the famous MagTrax braking system, which is included in this reel. It makes sure that there is consistent and nonstop braking pressure being put on the reel, throughout the entire casting process.
Here is the fastest reel out of these three for those primarily doing spot casting, then quickly reeling back in to re-cast, or those consistently using fast moving lures. It would also be the best reel for those pulling in quick running fish so they can never get ahead of you to get slack. It’s so fast because it has a 7.5:1 gear ratio, one of the quickest available, which is blazing fast.

This ultra-lightweight baitcasting reel from KastKing weighs just 5.7 ounces and is made from carbon, a material that is naturally resistant to corrosion and so tough that it can practically withstand anything. The 11+1 ball bearings are made from shielded and corrosion resistant MaxiDur, while the spool boasts hardy construction from aero-grade aluminum.
The gear ratio quickly summed up is the speed of your reel. The ratio is represented by x:1, and the x represents how many times the spool rotates for each single crank of the handle. For example, a gear ratio of 6.2:1 means the spool will rotate 6.2 times for each handle crank. Depending on the type of fishing you’re doing a higher gear ratio is typically more advantageous. For example, when covering a bunch of water, you’ll want to do a lot of casting and that means quick retrieval to get your lure back to the boat and out for another cast. A higher gear ratio speeds this process up to ensure you’re getting the most line in for each crank of the handle.
Like all of the Low Profile reels offered by Abu Garcia, the smoothness doesn’t end with the reel action. If you’re left handed, you’ll also be pleased to know that you can score one of these configured for your dominant hand as well. For those fresh to the baitcasting world, there’s simply no reason to get started with this quality reel.
Unlike other conservatively colored reels, this one stands out in its bold, eye-catching neon-green. If you prefer a more subtle reel, there is a silver colored option too. Other outstanding features about it include a low price, high-quality build and powerful features for a smooth performance. This is a reel by a lesser known brand but it is good quality and delivers a great performance for the money. It is a great reel for beginners.
Gear Ratio: The ratio is given as a number such as 7.4:1. This number tells you that the spool goes through 7.4 revolutions per one complete turn of the reel handle. Baitcasters are built for more aggressive retrieval techniques, so you will mostly see gear ratios higher than you will find on spinning reels. Most baitcasters will have gear ratios on average around 6.5:1.
Amazingly after like 20min (and after a couple of youtube videos), I started to get it. Of course I got some backlashes and my accuracy is way off, but this reel is just excellent and feels waaay better than the other brand-name /more expensive one! After a few days of practice now, I feel confindent to cast in short distances and my accuracy is improving to a point, that it almost feel like I got Jedi powers and I can hit individual beer cans from 50 feet!
