Once you have the reel, spool it with monofilament line in fairly heavy breaking strength—14 to 20 pounds—even if you plan on later fishing with lighter line. Heavier line is easier to learn to cast, and easier to pick out those unavoidable backlashes. Fluorocarbon line is a good choice to fish with, but it is a little harder to cast, so start with monofilament. Don't fill the spool on the reel, start with half a spool or less. The more line on the spool the heavier the spool and the faster and longer it will spin. Spinning too long is what causes backlashes (spool overruns), so start with less line.

This is a user-friendly baitcasting reel that reveals an exquisite manufacturing process in both the design and material quality. Lew’s Fishing Tournament MB Baitcast Reel is a casting reel that belongs to the MB series with new Lew’s smaller profile and reduced weight design. A few out of the outstanding features this baitcasting reel possesses include;

Just start by incrementally increasing the power of your cast. You may start to feel as if the reel cannot cast any further, yet your casts are still falling short. Simply loosen the brake just a hair and attempt the same cast. You’ll find that you gain distance but you’re starting to get some tangles. After pulling the knots out, compose yourself, and recast with a little more thumb pressure applied. Try to be aware of the feel of the line under your thumb during the cast and try to stop the line with your thumb as the casting weight hits the ground. You will quickly gain a feel for the way your baitcaster behaves depending on how hard you cast and the size of the casting weight you are using.

Before you can start casting, you need to set the brake on the reel properly for the weight of the lure that you will be using. Every time you change to a lure of a heavier or lighter weight than you started with, you need to make this brake adjustment. The brake knob is found of the side of reel, under the star drag on the reel handle. By rotating the knob clockwise, the brake tension on the spool is increased, making the spool run more slowly. Turn the knob counter clockwise and the opposite effect is achieved.
The 6.6:1 SX is going to excel at a wide swath of fishing techniques, and we recommend this one if you are looking for a workhorse, multi-purpose reel. The 7.3:1 reel on the other hand, will be better for you if you like to burn in topwater baits, or if you like to pitch and flip jigs or soft plastic creature baits. You’ll get more casts in with the 7.3 ratio.

To set your brake properly for the 1/2oz casting weight you tied on, start by raising your rod tip in front of you so the casting weight is hanging seven or eight feet above the ground. Depress the thumb bar on your reel to let the spool go into free spool and watch the line on the spool as the casting weight drops and hits the ground. Ideally, when the casting weight hits the ground the spool should stop spinning and paying out line. If the spool continues to spin when the casting weight hits the ground, you need to tighten the brake a bit. If the casting weight fails to drop to the ground then the brake is too tight and must be loosened. Make the necessary adjustment and repeat the process until the spool stops moving when the casting weight hits the ground.

When you begin learning how to use a baitcaster, everything centers around your thumb. Whether you’re right or left handed doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you keep your thumb on the spool of the baitcaster. Get a feel for it because your thumb will be on the spool quite often. In fact, the only times your thumb won’t be on the spool is when you’re retrieving line or battling a fish.

Now, let’s take a look at what you need to look for when shopping for a new baitcasting reel. If you found the perfect baitcaster reel for you among the best baitcasters reviewed above and have a great baitcasting rod to create a well-balanced baitcaster combo, you’re all set up to catch some trophy fish. If you’re finding it hard to decide which one you should spend your money on, here’s a guide to help you select the best for you.
Gears and Speed: The connection between how many times the spool turns after one turn of the handle is known as the gear ratio. A high gear ratio means a faster spool. Physical Size Of The Spool: For large fish, which typically baitcasters are designed for to catch, you will have to buy a larger spool size so that heavy lines can be accommodated comfortably on the spool.
Fishermen looking for a good trolling or bottom-fishing reel can not go wrong with the time-tested Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C3. It’s a classic and one of the best-selling reels of all time. With a 320 yard 12lb mono line capacity and 6.3:1 gearing, this winch of a reel is made for pulling big fish up out of deep water. The C3 comes in smaller sizes but we tested the big boy and loved the business-like look and feel of this reel.

There are two types of brakes: the centrifugal brake and the magnetic brake. Not sure which brake your reel is rocking? Does it have a knob (with numbers) on the opposite side of where your reel handle is located? Then it is probably a magnetic brake. Do you see a small (removable) side panel instead of a knob? Then your reel is probably equipped with a centrifugal brake.

July 2016 I have used this real very hard throw up to 4 ounce baits, has not missed a beat. I caught all these muskies in the pictures on this reel, handled them absolutely perfect. You need to take the spool out and put some grease down in the dog gear if you hear a grinding sound that will fix the problem. There is nothing wrong with the real it's just they are skimpy on their grease cost money you know. I am guess I have 40 hours of had use and it still doing great, there is no paint showing signs of wear either. I will give a update.
