You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on a baitcaster – these 5 are better than most reels that will cost you up to $200. Don’t spend a crazy amount of money when you can get reels like these for a lot less. Hope this comparison guide has been of great help to you. Have any thoughts on a similar product that could be the best baitcasting reel under 100? Let us know!
Otherwise, you could take the entire day trying to make a perfect cast since the line will continuously roll out and tangle itself up. In addition, you cannot use any other thing besides heavier lures, a characteristic that makes spinning reels preferable. Beginners may not find it appropriate using a baitcaster because it is vital to know how to use the thumb to control the line speed. If you fail to do this, a backlash could happen, causing the line to tangle if it moves too fast or with an awkward cast.

I still remember hooking a 4.5-pound bass and barely felt any torque. As I was turning the handle, the grip felt firm. Didn’t have a single slip till this day. I gotta say, the smoothness isn’t all there as Abu Garcia claimed with this one. But nonetheless, those 4-stainless ball bearings and 1 roller bearing performed flawlessly without any grinding for longer usage.
One added note about using your reels braking system. Many baitcasting reels are now made with secondary brake systems that the angler can use to fine tune the braking of the spool. Some of these brake systems use tiny magnets to control the speed of the spool and some systems use centrifugal force to slow down the spool. The details of operating magnetic and centrifugal brake systems are covered in detail in the following articles:
Yes, you guessed it right, this systems core function relies on the magnetic field. The biggest advantage this braking system has over centrifugal is a smoother adjustment. The spool speed is controlled by magnets throughout the entire cast, puts consistent resistant all the time. The system is more of a manual type and renders independence to allow adjustments when necessary against natural or artificial factors.
Before you can start casting, you need to set the brake on the reel properly for the weight of the lure that you will be using. Every time you change to a lure of a heavier or lighter weight than you started with, you need to make this brake adjustment. The brake knob is found of the side of reel, under the star drag on the reel handle. By rotating the knob clockwise, the brake tension on the spool is increased, making the spool run more slowly. Turn the knob counter clockwise and the opposite effect is achieved.
Hold the reel properly. Grip the rod behind the reel with your thumb resting over the reel spool. Baitcasting rods are designed the same as spincasting rods, and as with spincasting rods, most fishermen cast with the same hand they retrieve with, so if you prefer to hold the rod behind the reel when you retrieve, you'll need to switch hands when you cast.
Low profile baitcaster reels vs. the round baitcaster are very similar but the primary difference is the size. Low profile is the smaller, lighter reel and the round reel is larger and heavier. Low profile baitcasters are certainly the most popular for the typical fisherman. Here are some quick Pros / Cons for Low profile vs. Round Baitcasting reels.
There are many different additional brake systems on these reels, like Centrifugal brakes (pins inside creating friction) and Magnetic brakes that slow the spool down with magnets both of which are adjustable. You don’t have to understand the technical details here but I will say it’s impressive to see manufacturers continually pushing the technology in this area of the reel.
Choosing any baitcasting reel, much less the best one, can feel like a challenge to the average angler. There seems like a never ending array of features that need to be considered before one of these can be purchased. Options which include such things as gear ratios, braking systems, the number and type of ball bearings and spool designs. It can make choosing the best baitcasting reel an almost insurmountable challenge.

Intro: It’s been almost a century now the Abu Garcia(originally AB Urfabriken) is in the fishing business after the fishing enthusiastic son of the owner took charge. This famous brand originated in Sweden is now owned by Pure Fishing of the United States. ABU Garcia introduced a series of fishing reels and related products at the beginning of the 1950s.
CT stands for compact tatula. A remodel of the original but is more compact and ergonomic. Made from a new aluminum frame which is stronger, more durable, and lighter weighing only 7.2oz (approximately half an ounce lighter than the original). The Type R is a suped-up version of the Tatula CT. It comes with an additional 2 CRBB bearings, and a lighter spool making it lighter than the CT.
Baitcasting reels have become more user-friendly in the past few years and have now moved out of the pros-only space into the hands of everyday anglers. If you have watched tournament bass fishermen on TV, you have seen baitcasters in action. Baitcasting reels can handle the heavier lures and lines that are crucial for catching larger fish, and these reels come with very powerful gearing designed for hauling in big fish fast.
Once you find the right baitcaster, ensure that you match it up with a compatible baitcasting rod so you have a well-balanced baitcaster combo that will perform flawlessly. It will also take some practice and patience to learn to set up your reel correctly and thumb the spool like a pro. Once you get it, you will be ready to go after the big fish and experience the benefits of using this powerful type of fishing reel. Don’t be surprised to find yourself soon shopping for another baitcast reel to add to your fishing arsenal.
I wanted to follow up after we purchased the KastKing Royale Legend baitcaster since we got referred by your site. We purchased it on Amazon early May and have been using it out on the lake for a few weeks now. Keep in mind, this review is coming from a beginner baitcaster fisherman. I’m not a beginner fisherman, I’ve been fishing all my life with spinning reels. After seeing all the great reviews on the KastKing and saw the price was pretty comparable to the other reels, we decided to make the purchase online. We always read other reviews online before making a purchase. The reel is very lightweight and casts as smooth as a babys bottom. Some report that this reel feels cheaply made, but we do not feel this way. If you want cheaply made, then go to Walmart. We have caught so many bass (and catfish) on this reel that it’s not even funny.
An important thing you should always do is to go for the best and comfortable tool. You shouldn’t trade that for anything as you wouldn’t want to spend the after-fishing time nursing the pain gotten from using a tool. Therefore, if your choice of baitcasting reel doesn’t offer you maximum comfort-ability when you hold, it would hinder you from being a skilled angler. A comfortable grip and balanced combination of rod and reel would help you achieve more accuracy and improved casting. We have tested out different baitcasting reels and their working mechanism along with their features such as tensioners, drag settings, thumb latches, and others.
