If you have a very tight budget but still want to own a decent baitcasting reel, you should probably try this model by KastKing. The reel features 11+1 MaxiDur ball bearings that allow easy control over the reel and smooth long-range casting. But the best part is that the bearings are shielded and are corrosion resistant to withstand hardcore fishing.
Spinning reels are engineered for casting light baits ( which is not the case for every spinning reel), but with a baitcaster, the possibilities are endless. You can do Deep crankbaits, Big swimbait, Deepwater swimbaits, squarebill crankbaits, shallow spinnerbaits, Texas Rigs, Carolina Rigs, jerk baits, topwater etc with a baitcaster. (Note, specific bait presentation requires specific gear ratio).
Drag systems on bait-casting reels are layers of different materials that rub against each other to produce friction. They can be some of the smoothest in any kind of reel. Since you can use your thumb to add drag when a fish is fighting, you can set the drag initially to a lighter setting. That helps with fish that make long runs because less line on the spool means more drag. It is easier to add drag with your thumb than to adjust to reduce it while fighting a fish.

One of the bigger downfalls of baitcasting reels is their inherent tendency to tangle line easily while casting which is referred to as a “backlash”, “birds nest” or “over run”. This occurs because the spool often spins faster than the speed of the line leaving the spool.  This, in turn, causes the line on the spool to loosen and the line leaving the spool becomes jammed in the loose coils of line. This issue can be addressed through the use of the reels spool braking system which will cause the spool of the reel to rotate more slowly during a cast, which helps to control the speed at which line is paid off the spool.

Using a good baitcasting reel supplies a good level of casting control and helps you improve your fishing accuracy. This is mainly because you can adjust and control the speed and distance of your lure when casting with by holding the spool with your thumb. After a good period of use when you have become proficient in using it, your casting accuracy would have improved. Therefore, you can pinpoint easily with high accuracy thus enabling you to throw the lure to the exact location of the fish.
Made with durability on saltwater in mind, the Revo Toro has a corrosion-proof X-Craftic alloy reel frame, a heavy-duty gear set engineered for long life, and a high-capacity aircraft aluminum spool that can hold 250 yards of 14lb mono or 285 yards of 30lb braided line. The reel comes with a selection of three handles, including an extended bent power handle, and large ergonomic grips let you use the low 4.9:1 gear ratio to put maximum pressure on strong big game fish. When they run, the carbon disc star drag system can crank in 25lbs of braking power that will protect the line and wear out heavy, hard-fighting fish.
Press down on the reel spool with your thumb to stop the bait when it reaches the target. This is similar to pressing the button on a spincasting reel to brake the line; however, not applying your thumb soon enough leads to the spool continuing to turn after your bait hits the water, creating an overrun or "birds nest" that you'll have to straighten out before you can retrieve your lure.[7]
This is one of those brands of reels that you don't hear much about but continues to have solid ratings. I haven't used this reel myself, so I'm just stating the facts here. The high gear ratio of 7.1:1 is very enticing at the low entry price point for this reel. It has a high grade carbon drag system making it super lightweight and durable. The corrosion resistant ball bearings give this 5+1 system a good reason to give this reel a chance. It should be able to handle the water and last for years without replacing. A little bit heavier than most but not by much, its 8 oz, so you probably can not tell much difference. The 4.33 inch extended crank makes this sleek design stand out even more and gives you the ability to handle the load of a bigger fish easily. This reel sounds very promising and I would like to get my hands on one to try out. This might be the breakout baitcaster of 2018.
Another thing to consider is whether to go with a low profile or round profile body design. A round profile reel is gripped from the back delivering more power to throw big baits and go after larger fish. It also usually has a larger line capacity. If you’ll be going after bigger fish such as salmon, muskie, or steelhead, a round profile is the best while a low profile reel is more comfortable to fish with.

Once you have the reel, spool it with monofilament line in fairly heavy breaking strength—14 to 20 pounds—even if you plan on later fishing with lighter line. Heavier line is easier to learn to cast, and easier to pick out those unavoidable backlashes. Fluorocarbon line is a good choice to fish with, but it is a little harder to cast, so start with monofilament. Don't fill the spool on the reel, start with half a spool or less. The more line on the spool the heavier the spool and the faster and longer it will spin. Spinning too long is what causes backlashes (spool overruns), so start with less line.
A baitcaster works well with all three line types: monofilament, fluorocarbon and braid. I use a baitcaster with monofilament for topwater baits such as Zara Spooks, twitching suspended stickbaits and cranking in the shallows or at mid-depths. A baitcaster with fluorocarbon is my choice for jig fishing, Texas-rigged soft plastics and deep cranking. I rely on a baitcaster filled with braid for buzz baits, plastic frogs and topwater chuggers.
On the other end of the spectrum, baitcasting reels allow for casting lures like jigs, spinner baits and crankbaits with pinpoint accuracy, but there is a dialed in drag resistance and require a higher skill set to be able to thumb the spool as line flows off. If you can’t find that sweet spot of thumb pressure, you’ll experience a backlash bird’s nest of tangled line.

For strength, durability, comfort, and performance, this low profile reel is made up of a high strength and anti-corrosion nylon body, 8 stainless steel bearings plus two Japan NMB bearing, instant anti-reverse, CNC machined double-anodized aluminum alloy spool, precision matched brass gears, precision made magnetic brake system, ceramic line guide insert and an ergonomic stainless steel handle with smooth and comfortable natural cork knobs that feel good in the hand.
The Shimano Curado l reel has a low profile design that offers a consistently thin wall to help lower vibration and enhance smooth casting and retrieving. The baitcasting reel weighs 7.2 oz, with a monofilament line capacity of 8/180, 10/155, and14/110, and a line retrieve per crank of 26”. All these great features culminate to make Shimano Curado l reel a superb reel for your freshwater and saltwater fishing game.
We love how this baitcaster feels in the water. The SX models have a 9+1 stainless steel ball bearings and one anti-reverse bearing that eliminates most of the back play in the reel handle. The standard models have a 6.4:1 gear ratio while the high speeds get bumped up to 7.1:1. Retrieval is incredibly smooth and as the gear ratios imply, incredibly fast.
Reels come in different spool sizes you have 100’s, 150’s and this just means the amount of line the reel can hold. If you're using braided line this shouldn't be a major factor. Where it’s important is if you’re using bigger line and you need to be able to make longer casts and need to take up line a lot faster a bigger spool is better suited for that.
The KastKing Rover Round Baitcasting Reel has a lot of unique features which makes it to be a top pick for most fishermen and to be top rated. It features carbon fiber star drag system (up to 20 LB / 9 KG), 3.6:1 gear ratio, and six premium shielded stainless steel ball bearings (6 + 1 BBs on Size 40 – 60, 4 + 1 BBs on 70 – 90). It also features a line out clicker alarm 2-pin centrifugal brakes which provides a constant pressure at each cast and weighs 15.8 ounces
Attach your baitcasting reel to a compatible baitcasting rod. Add an appropriate fishing line whose size is within the capacity indicated on the spool and string the line through the guides. It’s easier to learn how to use a baitcaster using heavier lines. Tie a lure or a suitable casting weight at the end of your line. You can start with a 0.5oz weight.

As for handling, you get to choose between cork and EVA handles depending on which look and feel you like. Both options are durable and offer a soft, non-slip grip ensuring you have the control you need when casting and bringing in fish and offering comfort when fishing for hours. The cork handled reel is slightly more expensive than the EVA handled one.
I hope this guide was helpful for you to choosing a baitcasting reel and providing additional information on these reels. I love studying baitcasters and looking for new technologies and improvements. If there is a reel I didn’t include that you use and love, I’d love to hear from you. Additionally, I’m happy to take any questions/comments on this guide, for all these things please leave a comment below. Tight lines! Jesse
The tension knob controls the line at the beginning of your cast, and the brake system controls the line at the end of your cast. The brakes help especially when casting into the wind when your spool tends to spin faster than the bait as it is slowed down by the wind. A good tension and braking system is critical to being able to make long casts with a variety of lure weights and experience minimal backlashes.
For a light-weight, light-duty, low-cost reel, the Okuma Citrix comes in with a good package of quality details. A diecast aluminum frame gives rigidity to the reel while graphite side plates cut the weight. A 10-bearing drive system produces a surprisingly smooth mechanical action for a reel at this price point. This high-speed machine weighs in at a mere 7.2 ounces but the reel still spools 130 yards of 12lb test line and pulls it in at 31 inches per crank with a 7.3:1 gear ratio.

Shimano is a proven producer of great fishing reels and their Calcutta line has been setting the industry standard for round bait casting reels since 1991. The Conquest continues the heritage of the round reel as a true precision fishing machine. This compact round reel comes in at the top of the price range, but these reels are often referred to in angling publications as works of art and that description is not far off.

This is such a comfortable reel to use. The frame is graphite/aluminum which is more than decent and isn’t going to fall apart on you. To choose a beginning reel durability is definitely one of the most important factors, but above all else, you want your first experience with baitcasting to be fun and comfortable. This means that the soft-touch rubber handles that feel great to use here are a high point for the Citrix.
