As you inspect a baitcaster, it will give you a maximum drag specification. This number tells you the highest amount of force the drag system can put against the spool. Anglers typically fish between half and ¾ of that number. The higher the max drag, the more force you will be able to place against pulling fish. To set the drag, you either turn a star dial or push a lever.
Since every bait cast reel comes with a complete mechanism, braking systems are also included. They are responsible for adjusting the rotation of the spool when you are casting, so that it does not get out of hand. Otherwise, if it did not exist, you would forever be experiencing backlash (the knotted line that remains with you when the spool continues revolving, even after the lure stops moving forward).
On a reel designed for heavy use, you’ll need to make absolutely sure that the body is constructed of a great, solid material. You’ll lessen your chances of breaking this way, and the whole thing will last much longer. Remember though that heavier doesn’t necessarily mean stronger, there’s a lot of innovative, high-tech materials out there that are also extremely light.
Our thoughts: There are two models with Medium and high gear ratio available with the Revo SX. You can do squarebill crankbaits, shallow castable umbrella rigs, shallow spinnerbaits, Texas or Carolina Rigs and other bait styles. You can go either saltwater or freshwater with this one and if you’re obsessed with bass then get the REVO SX-HS model. And for reaction strike, REVO3 SX works better at lure presentation. The best fishing reels for sale and the Abu Garcia Revo SX series review section proves the point.

This is yet another super light-weight baitcasting reel from KastKing. It comes at only 6 ounces featuring durable carbon fiber construction. Also, it includes hard-forged aluminum gears that claim to offer 7.0:1 gear ratio thereby allowing fast retrieves without sacrificing on the reel’s strength.

Hold your rod approximately at the 1 o'clock position; release the spool to allow the weight to drop. Adjust the brake mechanism so that the coil stops rotating when the weight hits the ground. This setting reduces the likelihood of a game when you first cast. Once you can handle your baitcast reel with this setting, you can pull back on the brakes to increase the throwing distance.

Like all of the Low Profile reels offered by Abu Garcia, the smoothness doesn’t end with the reel action. As you can see, there’s much more that goes into learning how to use a baitcaster than meets the eye. Start with the fundamentals of casting and retrieving, but be aware of a baitcaster’s finer nuances. The mechanical systems of a baitcaster also determine how they perform. The best bet for a beginner is to go with a cast control system. It’ll make learning how to use a baitcaster so much easier, taking time away from frustration and using it to learn the other systems.

I would prefer to fish a baitcaster all the time because I can cast it more accurately by controlling the spool with my thumb. The reels feature higher gear ratios than spinning models which I need for high-speed presentations such as waking a spinnerbait, buzzing a buzz bait across the surface or burning square-bill crankbaits in shallow cover. I also prefer a baitcaster for all of the power fishing techniques with heavy line such as pitching and flipping, Carolina rigging and slow-rolling spinnerbaits.

Attach your baitcasting reel to a compatible baitcasting rod. Add an appropriate fishing line whose size is within the capacity indicated on the spool and string the line through the guides. It’s easier to learn how to use a baitcaster using heavier lines. Tie a lure or a suitable casting weight at the end of your line. You can start with a 0.5oz weight.

Being called one of the most popular baitcasters year after year, the Revo SX has shown to impress myself with its durability and ultimate control while fishing. I have reeled in so many bass with this fishing reel. Combined with the sturdy Vendetta rod, this combo can be sick! Buy both the rod and reel and you will have a nice setup for years to come. You are getting a very good combo for the money. This rod and reel is for both beginners and more advanced fisherman. They are both super lightweight with the alloy and carbon reel coming in at only 6.6 oz. It has 10 bearings with a 7.1:1 gear ratio and comes in both a right and left hand model. There are multiple generations of these reel and I'm amazed how they continue to reduce the weight each year.
Knowing how to use a baitcasters successfully begins with understanding the specifics of your particular baitcasting-fishing reel. Therefore, you should be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for alignment and weight at the beginning, along with recommendations for the rod type. This ensures that your equipment is set for peak performance and makes learning how to throw baitcasters much easier.

They have an advantage though – you can hold them using your dominant hand, so you have more control over them. You can also fish for longer periods because the weight of the reel is under the rod, so they are more comfortable. They can also cast lighter lures since the line peels off without blockage from reel spools or nosecone. They are useful for fishing in streams and inland lakes.

Reputation: So excited to show you the reputation folks! This high-speed low profile reel took the competition right away the moment it launched. No wonder why it’s got a huge amount of customer reviews with a 4.3/ 5 ratings on Amazon. The best thing of all is, Kastking legend/white max is the titleholder of the #1 best seller in Amazon. Wow, right?

Fishermen should appreciate the little touches incorporated into the Pro G. There is the SpeedKeeper near the seat of the reel that allows storing a Texas rig without pulling the hook form your plastic bait. Then there is ingenious Speed Dial built into the tension control knob. Just point the clicker to the size of your line and you’ll never have to play the line size guessing game again.
Once I had it setup, though, it was good and I didn’t have to touch it again after that. So, it wasn’t exasperating by any means. And it didn’t give me a headache due to having to adjust it and tweak it over and over again. Once I set it, I could forget it. But I wanted to mention this so anyone buying it will know in advance to set the brakes a bit tighter than you normally would. In fact, max the brakes out and tighten the spool tension knob more than normal, and then back them off slowly. If you do this, you’ll be more than fine.
Using a baitcaster, the angler releases the line by removing his thumb then must immediately bring his thumb back to bear on the line. Not to stop it, but with just enough of a touch to slow the spool. The reason? If the angler doesn’t do this the spool will spin faster than the release of line. This will cause the line to backlash, putting over wraps, under wraps, and knots throughout your spool. The minimum effect of backlash is a temporary halt to fishing. Worst case scenarios require a new spool of line.
The Legend is our best well-rounded pick because of its affordability and above average marks in just about every category. The line and the casting are more than good, frame is sufficient, and the lightness is another perk. A lasting point for this reel has to be its saltwater compatibility. So you’re not stuck to using this reel in just freshwater settings.
